Can we really stay on the current site?
The District asked architects and engineers to help them answer question in 2015. Here are some key findings from their report:
1. The existing buildings has NO major problems. - No critical structural or system deficiencies were identified! - Design Option 1A - Deferred Maintenance and Capital Improvement Upgrades Proposed work included roof replacement, improvements to the Kitchen, Stage, drives and parking, equipment replacement and upgrades to ALL mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Cost: $7-$11MM
2. It CAN be modified and enlarged at it’s current location. - Design Option 1B - Comprehensive Alterations and Additions Proposed work was based on the full 210,000 square foot “school of the future” program, whole building renovations, an 83,000 square foot addition, and several million dollars for site improvements. Cost: $50-$58 MM (not including new District Offices)
3. Staff/students may NOT have to vacate the building during the whole project.
4. The new addition will be outside of the flood zone so permitting would NOT be an issue!
What about the site, though?
- While it is compact, it is quite functional! (Note that the Department of Education recommendations for minimum acreage do NOT apply to existing school properties looking to renovate.)
- The stadium/athletic facilities are already on-site and operational.
- Its accessible at multiple points on both primary and secondary roads.
- Its already connected to the community, is both walkable and accessible on the existing bus line.
With the above in mind, why didn’t the District look further into Option 1B and do a Feasibility Study to evaluate in more detail what could be POSSIBLE before deciding to abandon it altogether?!
We would really like to know. An in-depth review of this option MUST be undertaken before the District proceeds any further!
